Argentine boss Lionel Scaloni has labeled Lionel Messi as ‘best in history’ even if he fails to win a major trophy with the senior national team.
Lionel Messi has been heavily lambasted for failing to replicate club success at national level but Argentine head coach Lionel Scaloni believes Messi is the best in history with or without a trophy for the senior national team.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner can boost of numerous accolades at Barcelona, winning almost every single trophy at club level, however, an Olympic gold medal and U20 World Cup glory are all Messi has to show for many years of loyal service with his country.
However, the Argentine skipper destiny for the national team can change at this summer’s Copa America, after guiding the team to the final stage with a showdown against fierce rivals and defending Champions Brazil.
And ahead of the final showpiece, Lionel Scaloni has backed his captain, saying Lionel Messi will go down as “best footballer in history” with or Without a senior international trophy.
Speaking ahead of the heavyweight encounter on Sunday, Scaloni told reporters:
“Win or don’t win, he will continue being the best footballer in history, he doesn’t need to win a title to demonstrate it.
“Obviously, we want to win because we haven’t made all this effort not to break the bubble.
“In the background, whether Leo wins or doesn’t, he has already demonstrated that he is the best in history, and even the opponents recognise it.”
The 34-year-old will be hoping to break his international curse after failing in his previous three attempt, with two being in the Copa America and the other one being 2014 FIFA World Cup.
