Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed instinct and determination were the key trait he looked for before signing a player
Manchester United’s legendary manager Alex Ferguson has disclosed the key trait he looked for before making a signing during his managerial career.
According to the Scottish trainee, instinct and determination were the major factors he took into consideration when recruiting.
Sir Alex Ferguson almost spend three decade at the helm of affairs at Old Trafford following his spells with East Stirlingshire, St Mirren, Aberdeen and St Johnstone.
Ferguson is regarded as one of the finest managers if not the best in football history following his success at Manchester United and he admits part of his glory down to his eye for players who shared the same mentality with him.
Speaking to the Club’s official website, Ferguson said: “I think that it could be divided into maybe a few parts. Some players I had were absolutely natural footballers, with natural talent. But there were others who shared my determination, who maybe weren’t the best players but made themselves the best, because they had something inside them too.”
“I go back to one of my first defeat as a manager, at 32 years of age. I did not expect it. I went into the game eyes wide open, that this was going to be easy. We lost 5-2 to Albion Rovers. I was the manager of East Stirlingshire, the players were on £5 a week, or something like that. I came home and I said ‘if I don’t get Alex Ferguson in my team, I’m not going to succeed.’ So I made sure that my players had a mental toughness about them, from that moment on.”
“I believe in instinct. I had a good instinct about players and I had good instinct watching players who l maybe wanted to buy. I knew that, looking at certain players, I could see traits that told me they were Man United players, or Aberdeen players.”
“Instinct was really important, sometimes it’s about picking the team. We’re playing certain teams and I’d have an instinct, I’m not going to play certain players but I’ll play other players. I wouldn’t say it’s intuition, I would say it’s instinct.”
