Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League by Lyon

In a game of thrilling and drama-filled conclusion, Lyon crashed Manchester City and Pep Guardiola out of the Champions League following a 3-1 victory at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Manchester City went into the game as huge favourites following their group stage meetings last season, however Lyon caused an upset as the Premier League runners-up suffered their third successive Champions League quarter-final exit in their last three seasons.

Lyon broke the deadlock through Maxwell Cornet in the 24th minutes, putting his side ahead in the first half.

However, a superb finish from midfield mystreo Kevin De-Bruyne levelled things up for Guardiola’s side as they looked more likely to win following a spell of dominance.

The Ligue 1 side took the lead once again through their top scorer Dembele even though he seemed to have fouled defender Aymeric Laporte in the build-up to the goal but VAR overlooked it.

Dembele again found the net with his second of the night and Lyon’s third just 59 seconds after Raheem Sterling had blazed a glorious opportunity in the six yard box, slotting home a rebound save from Ederson to hand Lyon a semi final ticket.

Lyon will face Bayern Munich in the Champions League last four for a slot in the final

Manchester City have once again failed to advance past the quarter final stage of the Champions League, being knockout in the final eight in their past three seasons in the competition.

Lyon will play Bayern Munich in the semi finals on Wednesday as they look to book their slot in the Champions League final proper.

Pep Guardiola has not appeared in the Champions League final since 2011 with Barcelona where he eventually won it. This has cause people to raise question that the Spanish tactician cannot win the trophy without Lionel Messi.
