Joan Laporta is confident he can persuade Lionel Messi to extend his stay at the Camp Nou
FC Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta believe that Lionel Messi will depart the club should he miss out on the opportunity to become the Clubs president later this month.
The Argentine future remains unclear and there has been rumors that the six-time Ballin d’Or winner will call time on his illustrious 16-year career at the Camp Nou come the end of the season.
However, Laporta still believes Messi can be convinced to further stay at the club, only if he beat competitions from fellow rivals Victor Font and Toni Freixa to become the club’s president for the second time.
“I am sure that if someone else other than me wins, he [Messi] will not stay at the club”
“I have good relationship with him, there is a lot of respect. We will make him an offer based on the club’s situation.”
“Maybe we cannot compete financially, but Messi is not ruled by money. He want to end his career at the highest level possible.”
Reports also indicate that the Argentine is keen to know who will emerge as the club’s next president before making any decision regarding his future.
Nonetheless, French giant Paris Saint-Germain are Keen to sign the forward, also the influence of former manager Pep Guardiola could also possibly lure him to join Manchester City.
