Carragher believes Manchester City now sit ahead of Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title
Former Liverpool and Sky Sports pundits, Jamie Carragher reckons Manchester City as the number one favorite to clinch the Premier League crown, following an injury to Liverpool’s versatile defender Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool peeped Manchester City last season to win the Premier League title by a whooping 99 points, but Carragher believes it will now be difficult for the Reds to retain the crown after the injury to club captain Van Dijk.
The experienced Dutch centre-back is set to be sidelined for about 7-8 months after sustaining a Cruciate Ligament injury in the Reds 2-2 stalemate in the Merseyside Derby on Saturday.
The Dutchman has been at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, playing a key role as the Reds ended their 30-year wait for English top-flight title last season.
And as a result of that several sportsmen have shared their opinions and the latest to disclose his thought is former Liverpool center-back, Jamie Carragher, who believes any additions to the current squad must be a defender after the club failed to replace Dejan Lovren in the summer.
“Liverpool next big singing has to be a centre-back anyway and I am talking next summer. Dejan [Lovren] went and they failed to replace him so they only have three centre-back and one of them, Joel Matip is always injured.”
“There is a question mark about Joe Gomez now. So there is no doubt that the club have to go big in the transfer market next summer.”
Virgil van Dijk has played about 95 matches for Liverpool in the Premier League since joining them in January 2018; out of that the Reds have 72 wins, 7 defeats, 76 goals conceded and 44 Clean Sheets.
Now that Van Dijk is out of the Liverpool set-up, where do you believe the Reds will finish in the Premier League at the end of the season?
