Ex Barcelona striker gave a tricky response when questioned about how he felt when playing alongside Messi
Cameroon star Samuel Eto’o gave a snide answer after he was quizzed about how he felt playing with Lionel Messi, saying “I did not play with Messi”.
The former striker played alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona. Howerver, the Argentine marked his presence at the Camp Nou after Eto’o had already established himself at the club.
Barcelona signed Eto’o from Real Mallorca in 2004, after playing over 150 games for the latter with then manager Rijkaard bringing in the striker.
During his days at Barcelona the Cameroonian formed a formidable partnership with Ronaldinho and Ludoric Guily, with Messi appearing in the scene later.
He struck about 130 goals in 199 outings for Barcelona during his five-year stint in Spain.
And in 2009 after Lionel Messi has fully grown, he overshadowed the striker as he left to Italy, joining Inter Milan in a swap deal that saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic going the opposite way.
In recent interview, a journalist posed a question to the ex-Barcelona striker as quoted by the Mirror: “You talk about Messi, what can Ansu Fati learn from him? You obviously played with him.
In s sharp response, Eto’o quickly said: “No. He played with me, it is different. Messi played with me. I did not play with Messi. In my time, Messi played with me. It is totally different. It is totally different.”
The 40-year-old further went ahead to express his confidence about Messi remaining with Barcelona.
“I can’t imagine Leo [Messi] with another shirt. It is his club, his home, his love. I don’t think that his continuity is due to a question of money. Love is Barcelona and Barcelona is Messi.
“I know Joan Laporta is preparing a reliable and interesting project for him”.
