The former Barca striker has revealed he won the European prize with his numbers ahead of iconic duo Messi and Ronaldo
Luis Suarez has disclosed he won the European Golden boots with his goals and not vote ahead of football great Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The two time Golden winner revealed his numbers took him ahead of the iconic duo and not by vote cast. The prestigious award was being dominated by Ronaldo and Messi since 2010.
When did Luis Suarez won the European Golden Boots award
However, in 2014 the Uruguayan managed to beat off competitions from the pair to win it for the first time in his career. In a season where the Liverpool lost the Premier League title to Manchester City, Suarez grabbed the front pages of many new papers with his prolific goal-scoring run.
Again, in the 2015/16 campaign, Suarez once again clinched the Golden boot award following a brilliant front trio partnership with fellow South American national Lionel Messi and Neymar at Barcelona. The striker found the back of the net 40 times.
Discussing his career, the striker commented his admiration for the award, saying:
“I won two golden boots in the era of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. I have to be proud because I won it by numbers, not because people voted for me.
“Again, I scored 3 goals against Madrid without Lionel Messi, did something similar in Liverpool without Steve Gerrard, and was Ajax captain at age 21.”
