The ex Black Stars right-back believes his motherland will lift the ultimate trophy

African Cup of Nations will come home according to former Black Stars defender John Paintsil. He disclosed that his instinct does tell him Ghana will lift the trophy in Cameroon.

The Black Stars since 1982 have now won the competition, despite being the third successful nations in the history of the tournament.

With several finals to their name in the AFCON competition, the Black Stars can boost of four titles, one behind second place Cameroon and three behind record holders Egypt.

Ghana over the past years haven’t excelled in tournament, after their brilliant run in 2010 WC.

The Stars failed to progress from their group in 2014 World Cup. And in 2018 the West African giant failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

With expectations and hope lost in the team, Paintsil thinks otherwise.

According to him, he feels the Black Stars are going to win the AFCON tournament in Cameroon.

Asked if Ghana can break the 40-year trophy drought, he said:

“I can smell it. I don’t want to put pressure on the players.”

Again the ex defender believes the AFCON is a better stage for the boys to prepare for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“We can use the AFCON to prepare the players for the World Cup, he added.

John Paintsil played for Ghana between 2001 and 2013, registering over 80 caps for the national team. He was part of the famous Black Stars squad that reached the quarter final stage of the 2010 WC in South Africa.
